Art and Norwegian folk art: four recent arrivals in our shop
An autumn landscape, flowers in an ornate frame, a painted wooden ale bowl and a long mangle board with a horse-shaped handle. Our latest additions show just how varied older objects can be, while colour, materials and traces of use offer connections between them.
Here are four recent arrivals in the online shop. Some details can be read directly from an object; others require more caution. We distinguish between a visible signature or inscribed date and a securely documented maker, artist or production date.
A Telemark landscape for the wall
The landscape bearing the inscription “fra Telemark” depicts a river with rapids, autumn trees and distant mountains. It is signed “L. Anders”. Blue water contrasts with red and yellow foliage, giving the scene a lively appearance.
The artist’s full identity and the exact date have not been confirmed. It is framed behind glass with a brown frame and a light-coloured mount. Overall framed measurements are stated as approximately 54 × 68 cm. The mount has yellowing and some marks; the frame shows age-related wear, small nicks and scratches.

Flowers, a dark vase and a gilt-coloured frame
The still life signed “Herm. Hernæs” features white, pink, purple and red flowers against a muted green background. It bears the date “14”, interpreted as 1914 in the existing listing. The artist’s full identity and the ownership history are undocumented.
The technique is stated as oil on canvas. Its ornate frame has patina and minor marks; the overall framed measurements are stated as approximately 35 × 48 cm. The work is a reminder to consider the subject, framing and condition together when choosing a pre-owned picture.

Rosemaling, an owner’s name and a painted date
The wooden ale bowl has floral rosemaling, a blue-green rim, the date 1851 and the owner’s inscription Guttorm Olsen Moen. Measuring 38 cm in diameter and 15.4 cm high, it offers ample space for both form and decoration.
The surface and paint show wear and signs of use. No particular painter or regional origin has been established. It is also undocumented whether the decoration and the date were applied at the same time. We therefore describe the inscription as it appears without treating it as proof of the bowl’s production date.

A horse-shaped handle and chip-carved rosettes
The mangle board is 83.5 cm long, with a horse-shaped handle, carved rosettes and traces of dark and red paint. The number 1805 is carved near the handle. The inscription is visible, but it does not establish when the board itself was made.
Wear is especially apparent on the horse-shaped handle and the front of the board. The detailed photographs show surface marks, small nicks and paint wear. The maker and more precise geographical origin are undocumented.

Choose with a measuring tape as well as your eyes
Consider size, condition and surface before deciding. A frame affects how a picture appears, while signs of use contribute to the character of an older wooden object. Our product pages provide original photographs, measurements, prices and current availability.
