Synthetic gemstone
A synthetic gemstone is made by people and has essentially the same chemical composition, crystal structure, and physical and optical properties as its natural counterpart. Synthetic ruby is therefore laboratory-produced ruby, rather than merely a red material that resembles it.
Synthetic and imitation
A simulant is defined by its use in resembling another stone. Glass can imitate ruby without having ruby's composition. Synthetic instead describes how a material was produced. Where documented, state both the gem species and its method of origin.
Older jewellery
Synthetic gemstones are not exclusively modern; their manufacture goes back to the late nineteenth century. The presumed age of a jewel therefore does not prove a natural origin. Seek professional examination for significant purchases. Distinguish a documented identification from an old label or family account, and keep any reports with the jewel.
