Acid-free paper for storage

Acid-free paper is used for interleaving, folders and light wrapping when storing objects or documents. The term describes a chemical property, but does not by itself guarantee suitability for every material or permanent stability.

Buffered and unbuffered paper

Conservation guidance distinguishes neutral, unbuffered papers from alkaline buffered papers. The buffer provides a reserve against acidification. The Canadian Conservation Institute also explains that acid-free papers can become more acidic over time, depending on their environment and the objects they contact.

Select enclosures for the object's material. Some photographic processes are sensitive to high pH. A product labelled acid-free should therefore not automatically be used for every photograph or mixed collection. Seek a conservator's advice for vulnerable or unidentified materials.

Reviewing household contents

Start with an inventory and photographs. Keep labels, notes and other provenance information associated with the correct object. Use suitable protection and record the wrapping type so later handling is understandable. Wrapping does not replace structural support or a condition assessment.

For a collection being considered for sale or clearance, read about OBA's estate inspections and household contents services. Establish what should be retained before packing and moving objects.
