Norwegian Mangle Board with Ornate Horse Handle and AMJ Initials

A decorative Norwegian mangle board with an ornately carved horse handle, rosettes and geometric chip carving. The painted initials AMJ add a personal detail. The board is thought to date from the 19th century, although its exact age, maker and specific provenance are undocumented.

Mangle boards were used with a separate wooden roller to smooth textiles. The sculptural horse, detailed carving and worn red surface make this an appealing example of Norwegian folk art.
