Arvesølv by Th. Marthinsen – Norwegian silver design with history

Arvesølv is a classic Norwegian silver flatware pattern by Th. Marthinsen, recognised by the strong geometric lines of its handles.

Inspired by Maihaugen

Th. Marthinsen states that the pattern was inspired by old leaded-glass windows from a storehouse at Maihaugen. Individual product pages date the design to 1965, while some overview pages state 1964. We therefore use 1965 as the introduction year for our listed pieces while noting this variation in the maker's own information.

Anton Tufte Andersen

Arvesølv is associated with designer Anton Tufte Andersen and entered production at Th. Marthinsen in the mid-1960s.

What does 830S mean?

Many vintage Norwegian Arvesølv pieces are marked 830S, indicating a silver fineness of 830 parts per thousand, or 83 percent silver. Maker's marks, dimensions, form and decoration should also be checked when identifying a piece.

A wide range of pieces

The pattern was produced in numerous forms, including table cutlery, coffee spoons, children's cutlery, fish cutlery and serving pieces. Vintage individual pieces can therefore be useful for completing an existing service.

Buying vintage Arvesølv

Check hallmarks, pattern, wear, deep scratches, dents, engravings and repairs. Fine surface scratches are normal on older silver flatware. Knives and some serving pieces may have a different construction from solid silver spoons and forks, so each item should be assessed individually.
