Selling gold and silver in Skien? Why old jewellery should be assessed before scrap
Do you have gold or silver at home that is no longer used? Old rings, chains, bracelets, silver flatware, coins and other precious-metal objects may represent significant value. Before an item is treated as scrap, one important question should be asked: is it worth more as an object than as metal?
At Østlandet Brukt & Antikk we work with gold, silver, jewellery, antiques and collectibles, so we assess more than weight and fineness.
The gold price is only part of the value
A mark such as 585 normally indicates 14 carat gold, while 750 usually indicates 18 carat. Older jewellery may also have value connected to maker, age, design, craftsmanship, rarity, gemstones, provenance and demand.
What gold do we buy?
We assess rings, necklaces, bracelets, brooches, pendants, earrings, gold watches, coins, dental gold, damaged jewellery and other gold items. Damage does not necessarily remove all value.
What silver do we buy?
We assess silver jewellery, flatware, serving pieces, candlesticks, bowls, trays, trophies, hollowware, coins and other silver objects. Common Norwegian marks include 830S and 925. Read our guide to Norwegian silver hallmarks.
Professional XRF testing
We use XRF equipment as one tool for analysing metal composition. XRF examines the surface material and must be interpreted together with hallmarks, weight and visual inspection. It does not by itself determine age, maker, gemstones or market value.
Common marks
585 / 14K: 58.5% gold.
750 / 18K: 75% gold.
830S: 83% silver.
925 / Sterling: 92.5% silver.
Why assess the whole object?
An old piece of jewellery is not always just a few grams of gold. It may represent Norwegian jewellery history, an attractive vintage design or a collectible that deserves to remain intact.
Selling gold and silver locally in Skien
Our background in antiques and collectables means we consider the complete object before metal value becomes decisive. We buy individual pieces and larger collections, and a visit allows you to discuss the objects with us.
Precious metals from inherited collections
Broken chains, single earrings, cufflinks, flatware and small boxes of coins can be overlooked during a clear-out. Keep the collection together for an assessment before sorting items out. An object's designer, craftsmanship or collector interest may be relevant alongside its metal content.
Our XRF testing guide explains what analysis establishes and where its limits lie. You can also browse jewellery in our shop, or contact us about objects you are considering selling.
