BankID after a death in Norway

BankID is a personal electronic identity used for identification and signing. After a death, clarify practical tasks with the bank and the relevant service. Do not use the deceased person's BankID, password or code device to try to administer the estate.

Use your own identity

BankID's guidance recommends that people assisting others use the service's authorisation arrangements and their own BankID. This identifies who actually performs the action. Ask the bank which procedure and documents it requires for your particular task. A formuesfullmakt and skifteattest are separate documentation topics, rather than login credentials.

The bank's procedure

DNB's estate guidance states that the deceased person's BankID and online banking are deleted when the bank receives notification of death. SpareBank 1 Sør-Norge also describes terminating BankID following notification. These are the banks' accounts of their own procedures. Contact the deceased person's bank about status and next steps instead of testing whether the login still works.

Code devices and computers in the home

BankID explains that possessing a code device does not always mean the user has BankID: some banks also use other login methods. Practical suggestion during clearance: Keep code devices and bank papers together for clarification with the bank. Do not share photographs containing passwords or security codes. Separate banking access from preserving and erasing data on computers.
