Inkwell (inkhorn)

An inkwell is a container that provides ink for writing with a dip pen. The nib is dipped into the reservoir before writing. An inkhorn is particularly associated with horn containers, although the term also occurs historically for this kind of writing accessory.

Inkwells may stand alone or form part of a desk set. A portable inkhorn differs from a large desk-mounted reservoir. London Museum documents a decorated horn example and explains how travelling scribes could carry such containers. Telemark Museum illustrates the relationship between an inkwell and a dip-pen nib.

Inspect the lid, hinges, mounting and any inner reservoir. Establish which components survive and whether inserts or lids were added later. Ink residue can support an interpretation of use but cannot establish age or ownership. A small vessel is not automatically an inkwell: form, fittings and documentation should be assessed together. Keep ownership traditions distinct from secure object information.
