Breikjede: Norwegian bunad chain
What is a breikjede?
A breikjede, also called a panserkjede in Norwegian bunad-silver retail, is a chain made of interlinked rings. The name is used especially for a long silver chain worn as part of Norwegian traditional dress jewellery. The design, length and metal still need to be assessed on the individual object.
Use with bunad silver
Norsk Flid’s product description for a Sylvsmidja breikjede says it may be worn with dalarar (coin-like pendants) or on its own, with or without a bunad. The description associates traditional use particularly with Voss and Hardanger. This information concerns the described style and does not securely date or identify another chain of similar appearance.
The specific model listed is described as 100 cm long and made of 830 silver. Those details apply to that model; they are not fixed specifications for every breikjede. See OBA’s entries on bunad dress and 830 silver.
Identification
Examine the links, joins, clasp, wear and any marks. The name alone does not establish age, workshop or silver fineness. Assess the marks together and distinguish chain style from material and maker.
