Tablet weaving
Tablet weaving is a technique for making strong patterned bands. Warp threads pass through holes near the corners of thin tablets, usually square. When the tablets are turned, often by a quarter turn at a time, the threads twist and create the shed through which the weft passes.
The direction and sequence of turns control pattern and structure. Tablet weaving should not be confused with rigid heddle band weaving, where a heddle raises and lowers the warp. In Norway the technique survives in bands associated with traditional dress and bunad use.
