Rigid heddle for band weaving

A rigid heddle for band weaving, known in Norway as a grindvev or båndgrind, is a small tool for weaving narrow bands. It has alternating holes and slots. Alternate warp threads pass through a hole or slot. Raising and lowering the heddle creates the shed for the weft.

Materials and decoration

Older examples may be wood, horn or bone. Many Norwegian heddles are carved and may carry symbols, initials or dates. They were also used as courtship or betrothal gifts, but this cannot be assumed for every decorated example.

Assessment

Inspect the slats, holes, frame, wear and repairs. A carved date may record a gift or later marking rather than manufacture. Preserve documented associations with bands, shuttle and place of origin.
