Brooches
Brooches are jewellery fastened to clothing with a pin and clasp, ranging from costume jewellery to handcrafted gold, silver, enamel, filigree and stone-set pieces.
Identification
Inspect the reverse for fineness marks such as 830S, 925S or 585, maker’s marks, assay marks, date letters and model numbers. Record dimensions, weight, material, decoration and clasp. The fitting alone rarely provides a conclusive date.
Materials and condition
Brooches may be cast, repoussé, engraved, filigree or enamelled. Do not identify coloured stones without reliable testing. Check pin, hinge, clasp, solder, distortion, enamel and missing parts. Signature, designer, motif, age, craftsmanship, box and provenance influence interest.
