Chatelaine
A chatelaine is a waist hook or pendant with chains for small objects. Historical examples could carry sewing, writing or personal care implements. Keys, a watch, scissors, a thimble or a scent container may be present, but the combination varies.
Construction
The upper fitting attaches at the waist while several chains end in hooks or implements. Chatelaines were made in precious metal, steel and other metals, ranging from practical tools to costly jewellery.
Assessment
Check whether links, hooks and implements agree in style, material and wear. Parts may have been replaced or assembled later. A mark on one component does not automatically identify the entire chatelaine.
