Erasing data before passing on a computer

The computer and its contents need separate attention

When a computer is sold, donated or recycled, its stored data needs separate consideration. Documents, photographs and saved logins may remain with the equipment. Moving files to the recycle bin is not the same as secure erasure. The method must suit the storage medium and operating system.

Preserve what should be kept

First establish who may decide how it is handled and what needs preserving. Make the necessary backup before erasing anything. Practical example: A family computer from an estate may contain photographs to preserve before preparing the device for another owner. Do not attempt to bypass passwords or account locks. This differs from the public Digitalt dødsbo service.

Follow the appropriate manufacturer's guidance

Microsoft distinguishes resetting while retaining personal files from removing them. Consumer data-cleaning options do not establish compliance with industry erasure standards. Apple's procedure depends on the Mac model and macOS version. Follow the applicable manufacturer's guidance and seek qualified help for uncertainty, defective equipment or particularly sensitive information.

Clarify matters before collection

Record what has been backed up, which preparation was completed and what remains unresolved. At an OBA estate inspection, identify computers whose contents have not been cleared for transfer. Agree responsibility before handover. An agreement to handle household contents does not itself establish a data-erasure service. Manufacturer guidance was checked on 1 November 2026.
