Donating household contents from an estate

Donating household contents from an estate means giving usable objects to a recipient without a purchase price for the objects. This may suit part of an estate, but acceptance, collection and clearance must be agreed separately. Giving things away does not automatically make transport or clearance free.

Establish what can actually be accepted

Check the specific recipient's product categories, capacity and condition requirements before arranging delivery. Fretex, for example, states that clothes and textiles intended for reuse should be intact, clean and dry. Large furniture is accepted only at some locations. Local arrangements can be more limited than an organisation's general description.

As a checked example, Fretex's Drøbak shop states that it accepts small quantities of textiles, miscellaneous small items and books, but no furniture. This is a local example checked on 1 November 2026, not a rule for all second-hand shops. Check current acceptance before travelling.

Donation, purchase and clearance contracts

In a donation, the recipient does not pay a purchase price for the objects. In an outright purchase, a buyer offers a price for the contents. A clearance contract covers work and may have a separate charge. Fretex describes complete estate clearance as a paid service, subject to capacity and local presence.

As a practical approach, mark an inventory with categories such as retain, offer for sale, proposed donation and assess as waste. Consult the person with authority over the estate before giving objects away. Distinguish reuse from material recycling in the plan.

Next step: For a purchase offer or help with an overall clearance, see OBA's estate and clearance services. Obtain written clarification of what is purchased, passed on or collected, and any charges.
