Transferring a vehicle from a deceased estate in Norway

Vehicles need a separate check

A car or another registered vehicle in a deceased estate requires the correct documentation when ownership changes. The Norwegian Public Roads Administration distinguishes private estate administration, court administration and an undivided estate. A notification of sale reports that a vehicle has changed owner.

Identify the right documents

Establish the estate procedure and who will act for the estate. Private administration and court administration are different ways of settling it. For private administration, the Roads Administration describes different procedures for one heir and several heirs. Use the applicable section and check requirements for certificates, authorisation and identification.

Record more than a sale price

Practical example: Record the registration number, keys, available papers and known condition in the estate's object inventory. Note whether an heir will take the vehicle or it will be sold. This working list does not replace official documentation.

Next steps

Follow the Roads Administration's guidance for vehicles after a death. Also clarify insurance and any ownership-transfer tax. When arranging an OBA inspection of household contents, mention vehicles separately and agree any handling explicitly. This overview concerns Norway, was checked on 1 November 2026 and does not determine individual inheritance rights.
