Enamel decoration on glass
Enamel decoration on glass is made by applying a mixture containing finely powdered glass and colouring material to a glass surface. Firing bonds the enamel to the substrate. Several colours may require several firings.
Features
The enamel forms a coloured surface layer and may be brushed, printed or otherwise applied. It can create figures, ornaments, lettering and outlines. Wear, flaking and losses often begin on exposed areas.
Confusions and care
Enamel decoration must be distinguished from cold painting, where paint is not fused to the glass, and from colour within the glass body. Aggressive cleaning can damage loose decoration. Record technique, wear and any later overpainting before treatment.
