Granulation
Granulation is a goldsmithing technique in which tiny metal grains are attached to a metal surface to create patterns or texture. GIA describes it as small gold particles adhering to the surface like beads without apparent evidence of solder.
Grains, not wire
Granulation differs from filigree, which builds patterns with fine metal wires. Both techniques can occur on the same object. The grains may appear singly, in rows or in dense fields, and fine work usually shows even placement and secure joins.
Assessment and care
Look for missing grains, old repairs, melted areas and solder residue. Cast imitations may reproduce the grain shapes as part of one cast surface. The technique alone does not date a jewel because it has been used in antiquity and in modern work. Avoid brushing and ultrasonic cleaning until loose grains and stones have been checked.
