Wheel engraving of glass
Wheel engraving of glass is performed by holding the object against a rotating disk supplied with abrasive. Wheels have different sizes and profiles and are often copper, though stone and other materials are also used. The design is created by removing glass.
Features
Engraving ranges from fine lines to deeper modelled areas. The cuts lie below the original surface and may have different gloss after grinding and polishing. Work may be figurative, ornamental or inscribed.
Confusions
Moulded or pressed decoration repeats from a mould and does not show the same worked cuts. Acid etching often produces a more even matte surface. Examine direction, depth, polish and how the motif follows the individual vessel.
