Cameo jewellery
A cameo is a gem, shell, glass paste or similar material carved in raised relief. Contrasting colour layers are often used so the subject stands out from the background. Cameos may be mounted as brooches, pendants, rings or other jewellery.
Material and subject
Agate, chalcedony, shell and moulded glass occur. Portraits and classical scenes are common, but the subject alone does not date the work. An old motif may have been copied much later.
Cameo or intaglio?
A cameo has a raised design. An intaglio is cut into the material and may serve as a seal. Examine layers, cutting traces, reverse, setting and repairs. Moulded glass and plastic can imitate hand carved materials, so the material requires separate assessment.
