Winnowing shovel (kasteskovl)
A kasteskovl is a hollowed wooden board with a short handle, used to clean and sort grain after threshing and preliminary cleaning. Kastespjeld is a regional Norwegian name. Throwing separated lighter remnants, which fell nearer the worker, from heavier grain.
Its function differs from that of a grain sieve: throwing and air resistance assist sorting, whereas a sieve has openings in its bottom. Maihaugen's interpretation material for Øygarden lists the tool alongside coarse and fine sieves.
Record the board's hollowing, rim, handle and wear. A dark surface alone does not establish age or farm provenance. Keep evidence of use and local terminology with the object. Look for repairs that may have altered its shape.
