Laundry mangle and box mangle
A laundry mangle smooths textiles by pressing them against rollers or a supporting surface. An older type is the box mangle, whose heavy box provides pressure. Other cold mangles use spring-loaded rollers and a hand crank. These terms describe different constructions, not a single model.
Yrjar Heimbygdslag documents several mangles with recorded local histories from Ørland, Norway. They include YHL 738 from Uthaug and YHL 4201 from Solheim farm at Berg. Such individual records offer comparisons for size and provenance but do not date other mangles of a similar appearance.
Distinguish a mechanical mangle from a handheld mangle board. Record pressure mechanism, rollers, frame and drive separately. Note split wood, corrosion, missing gears and replacements. Measure both working width and overall dimensions. An acquisition or donation year in a museum record is not the manufacturing date. A decorative miniature should not automatically be described as a full-size working appliance.
