Lace bobbin

A lace bobbin is a small thread holder used in bobbin lacemaking. Thread is wound onto its spool-shaped section, while the remaining body provides a grip. Multiple threads are worked around pins on a pillow to form the pattern. The bobbin should therefore be distinguished from knitting needles and from the pins that support the lace.

Lace bobbins can also be decorative collectibles. London Museum describes record A10324 as a wooden example with pewter rings, decoration and a beaded spangle. Such features are not universal and cannot independently date an undocumented example.

A Norwegian Crafts Institute report on metal-thread lacemaking also documents bobbins with metal hooks. Examine thread holder, grip, attachments and wear together. Preserve old thread and associated tools as potential evidence of use and the original working context.
