Grain-cleaning sieve (kornsåld)
A kornsåld is a coarse sieve for cleaning threshed grain. Shaking allowed grain to fall through openings in the bottom while larger straw fragments were separated. Other Norwegian names are hæresåld and skaksåld.
Round or oval examples could have bentwood rims and woven bottoms. Box-shaped forms also existed, sometimes with legs or suspension. This grain-cleaning tool differs from a fine flour sieve.
Document the bottom construction, openings, joints and any suspension fittings. Missing or renewed mesh can change how an object is interpreted. Preserve farm provenance and evidence of use, and avoid firm age or regional attributions based on shape alone. Check for repairs and replacement parts.
