Scythe
A scythe is a hand tool for mowing and cutting vegetation. It has a long shaft with a cutting blade mounted near the lower end. The tool is operated with both hands in a sweeping motion. Tool museum MOT documents use for grass, grain and weeds.
The scythe is the complete implement, while its shaft is the snath. This distinction matters when recording or selling a detached component. Shaft shapes and grips vary. Blade and shaft may also date from different periods. A sickle normally has a shorter grip and a different method of use.
When assessing older examples, document blade profile, attachment, shaft and markings separately. Examine wear and later alterations before assuming the parts were originally together. A manufacturer's mark on the blade does not necessarily identify whoever made the wooden shaft. Farm provenance and age require more than appearance and patina.
