Pocket Match Safe (Vesta Case)

A pocket match safe is a small case for carrying matches. English terms include vesta case and match safe. Distinguish it from a loose outer sleeve covering an ordinary paper matchbox.

Materials vary. Science Museum Group records a silver case hallmarked for Chester in 1906 and an oval example cautiously described as possibly gutta-percha, dated 1871 to 1910. Object type alone therefore establishes neither material nor an exact date.

Record the opening, closure, interior, any striking surface and all marks. Distinguish maker's marks, fineness marks and personal initials. A decorative motif is not a maker's signature. Preserve uncertainty about material rather than identifying silver or a particular plastic from appearance alone.
