Locket jewellery
A locket is jewellery formed as a round or oval capsule, usually worn on a chain or bracelet. It opens to hold a small portrait, photograph, lock of hair or another personal keepsake.
Form and contents
Lockets are often gold or silver, though other metals and materials occur. The hinge, catch, glass and inner frame are important components. Some examples are decorated on both sides, while others have a motif or monogram on the exterior.
Common confusions
The Norwegian word medaljong also describes reliefs and ornaments. In jewellery, the opening or closed capsule form is central. A locket with hair or a portrait may be a love token or mourning jewel, but its purpose requires evidence.
Inspect the hinge, closure, inscriptions, images and signs of replacement. A photograph may be younger than the locket itself.
