Meddrag (log scribing tool)
Meddrag is used in discussions of scribing and tools in Norwegian log building. Originally, the word denotes the line transferring the upper contour of one log to the underside of the next. This guides the cutting needed for the logs to fit together. The tool is also called a mede or tømmergaffel.
Transferring a contour
The purpose is to copy a profile rather than simply read a length. A practical account on Tradisjonelt bygghandverk uses mé and maur for different parts of the scribing process. The illustrated tool has openings of different widths. Dimensions used in that particular trial are not a standard for every historical example.
Identification
Photograph the points, openings, overall shape and any alterations. Distinguish a scribing tool from a timber calliper measuring diameter. State whether identification rests on documented use, provenance or a provisional comparison. An old iron tool should not be assigned a date or locality merely because it resembles a published example.
