Micromosaic

Micromosaic is detailed mosaic work made from exceptionally small pieces called tesserae. In antique jewellery and small decorative objects the pieces are usually glass, set closely enough for the subject to resemble a miniature painting.

Features

Subjects include architecture, landscapes, animals and flowers. Magnification reveals individual pieces and joints. The craft was especially developed in Rome from the second half of the eighteenth century, but an object's age must be judged from the whole construction.

Confusions

Micromosaic should be distinguished from painted porcelain, enamel, glass paste and modern printed inserts. Assess the setting, back, wear, repairs and provenance as well as the mosaic itself.
