Mortar and pestle
A mortar is a vessel in which a pestle is used to crush or pulverise material. The tool occurs in households and pharmacies. Examples may be made of brass, stone or porcelain, among other materials.
Examine the vessel and pestle separately
When assessing an older set, describe both parts independently. Note the mortar’s opening, foot, handles and internal wear. Examine the pestle’s length, grip and working ends. Two parts being offered together today does not prove that they were originally made or sold as a set. Compare materials, proportions and known ownership history before confirming the connection.
Marks and condition
Photograph inscriptions and marks together with the complete object. Consider a cast date against construction and documentation rather than simply repeating it as a secure manufacturing year. Check cracks, chips, repairs and alterations to handles or the foot. Shape alone does not establish whether a loose example served as kitchen equipment or pharmacy apparatus. An unknown history of use should remain explicitly unknown.
