Nøstekrok (Norwegian yarn hook)
A nøstekrok is a hook for carrying a ball of yarn while knitting. Attached to a belt or pocket, it allows the knitter to keep the yarn close while standing or walking. Spøtakrok, bundingskrok and bundingsklave are Norwegian names for the same implement.
Construction and use
An upper hook or loop attaches the tool to clothing, while the lower part supports the yarn. Examples range from simple wire forms to more elaborate brass or silver pieces, sometimes decorated or bearing an owner's initials. Vesterheim's museum store also documents a modern example by Sylvsmidja. The object type alone consequently does not establish great age.
What to examine
Study the attachment and yarn-holding mechanism rather than decoration alone. Compare the form with documented textile tools before identifying a loose hook. Distinguish a working yarn holder from jewellery merely reproducing its motif. Record worn attachments, bent components and repairs. Initials should be recorded as an inscription rather than automatically interpreted as a maker's mark. Silver content and workshop attribution require separate investigation.
