Object ID (object identification standard)

Object ID is an international documentation standard for identifying and describing artistic and cultural objects. The International Council of Museums (ICOM) presents it as a practical tool for collection inventories and identification following loss or theft.

The standard covers nine information categories: object type, materials and techniques, measurements, inscriptions and markings, distinguishing features, title, subject, date or period, and maker. It also calls for photographs, a short written description and secure storage of the documentation. Use ICOM's Object ID checklist as a starting point.

Take overall photographs and close-ups of signatures, marks, repairs and damage. Measurements should include units and specify the dimension measured. Link the record to an object inventory when reviewing household contents.

Practical example: A vase photograph can be linked to its height, material, a transcription of a signature and a photograph of a particular chip. Record the maker as unknown if not established, rather than supplying a name that sounds certain. Keep visible characteristics separate from uncertain ownership history and attribution.

Object ID records identifying features; it does not replace a separate assessment of value or authenticity. Before selling, read about valuation at OBA and use the photographs and description to support your enquiry.
