Norwegian beer bowl

A traditional Norwegian beer bowl is a wooden drinking vessel for serving and drinking beer. Many are turned and have painted or carved decoration. The term describes the vessel's use, not one particular rosemaling style or local production tradition.

Decoration and drinking verses

The University of Bergen's museum presentation describes use on ceremonial occasions and the humorous drinking verses often found on the bowls. Its example carries an inscription containing the year 1778. Record such information for what it is: a readable inscription, not automatically an independently confirmed manufacturing date.

What should a collector examine?

Document diameter, height, form, decoration and all inscriptions. Examine the base and underside too, where construction, wear and repairs may be more apparent. A decorated wooden bowl was not necessarily used as a beer bowl. Consider form and known use alongside provenance.

Age and condition

Do not attribute a bowl to a particular rosemaling artist or valley from a general floral pattern. Original paint, later repainting and retouching are different matters. Describe cracks, chips and repairs without sanding or refreshing the decoration. Preserve old labels and ownership information, but separate reliable facts from earlier assumptions.
