Technique

Cased glass

Cased glass has one glass layer over another, usually in contrasting colours. A gather may be applied over an existing layer, or a bubble may be inflated inside a preformed blank. The layers are reheated and shaped as one object.

Decoration

The upper layer can be cut, engraved or etched away to reveal the colour below. This produces strong contrasts. When several layers are cut into relief, the result may be described as cameo glass.

Confusions

A very thin applied colour layer is often called flashed glass and may look similar. Painted or stained surfaces are not the same as a fused glass layer. Examine the rim, foot, cut areas and any damage to understand the construction.
