Pâte de verre glass
Pâte de verre means glass paste and is a process in which glass is ground to a fine powder and mixed with a binder. The mixture is placed or tamped into a mould, dried and fired so the glass particles fuse.
Surface and form
The process can create translucent or more opaque objects with a granular or soft looking surface. Colours may be arranged in the mould before firing. After cooling, the object is removed and finished.
Confusions
Pâte de verre should be distinguished from ordinary cast glass, pressed glass and glass paste used as a gemstone imitation. Surface and mould traces alone do not securely date an object. Examine thickness, particle structure, seams, wear and documented maker.
