Ink erasing knife

An ink erasing knife is a writing accessory with a blade used to scrape ink stains or pencil marks from paper. The Belgian museum MOT documents the tool as an erasing knife. Different forms exist, including versions with a pointed blade.

Its function differs from that of a letter opener, which opens envelopes, or a penknife used to trim pens. A knife-like tool in a writing set should therefore not automatically receive the same identification as the other pieces. Compare blade shape and documented function.

When recording an older example, describe dimensions, blade, handle and inscriptions separately. A missing handle or blade tip may complicate identification. Do not demonstrate the scraping action on historical documents. Preserve the object's own documentation rather than attributing a maker or date from its shape alone.
