Technique

Reticello

Reticello, also called vetro a reticello, is a type of blown glass in which glass canes cross to form a fine net. The Corning Museum of Glass explains that the pattern may contain tiny trapped air pockets.

How the net is formed

The pattern is built from canes running in crossing directions. Small bubbles may be trapped at their intersections in a regular grid. Reticello belongs to the filigrana family but is more specific than the general term filigrana.

Confusion

A painted grid, engraved cross pattern or random bubbles are not reticello. Check that the canes actually lie within the glass wall and follow its form. The Venetian name does not prove that an object was made on Murano or during the Renaissance. Later workshops and modern glass artists have used the same basic principle.
