Rose cut

A rose cut has a flat base and a domed crown rising to an apex. The crown is built from triangular or lozenge shaped facets and lacks the flat table found on many modern brilliant cuts.

Historic use

GIA describes the rose cut as an early diamond cutting style from the sixteenth century. It was later used for garnet and other coloured stones. Facet number and arrangement vary, so rose cut refers to a family of forms rather than one fixed pattern.

Assessment

Examine the profile, flat base, facet pattern, wear and setting. Older rose cuts can be irregular, but irregularity alone does not prove age. Glass and other materials may be cut or moulded in a similar form. Material and date require separate assessment.
