Long-tailed silverfish in household contents and collections

Long-tailed silverfish can travel with objects

Long-tailed silverfish are wingless insects resembling common silverfish, but with more conspicuous hairs and longer tail filaments. They can live in drier rooms than common silverfish. Confirm the species reliably before planning treatment.

Household contents and collections

The Norwegian Institute of Public Health describes damage in ordinary homes as minor. Old books, stamp collections and plant-based textiles may nevertheless suffer if a population develops unchecked. Do not assume every object is damaged or that one affected box reveals the population's extent.

Clarify matters before moving

The insects can travel with furniture, crates and packaging. Norway's National Archives recommends inspecting incoming material and separating suspect material for follow-up. Practical example: Record the discovery location and keep a suspect box of books apart from an inspected collection while identification and handling are clarified.

Seek professional pest-management advice. Valuable objects may also need a conservator's assessment before treatment. Do not apply one heat, freezing or chemical recipe to all household contents.

Next steps

Disclose known findings when requesting an OBA estate inspection or clearance. Agree transport, storage and responsibilities before mixing objects with other contents. Inspection does not guarantee the absence of hidden insects.
