Shoehorn
A shoehorn is a shaped implement that helps the heel slide into a shoe or boot. It is placed between the heel and the back of the shoe during dressing. This function differs from a boot jack, which assists removal.
The name does not mean every example is animal horn. Te Papa’s museum definition includes horn, plastic and metal, as well as wood. Salisbury Museum records an engraved horn example dated 1593, showing that everyday implements could also be decorated craft objects.
Describe material, shape, suspension features and inscriptions. Inspect the thin edge and transition to the handle for cracks, chips and repairs. Decoration and patina alone cannot securely date an object. Do not transfer a museum example’s date or maker to a similar undocumented piece.
