School wall chart
A school wall chart is an image intended for teaching and shared viewing in a classroom. Oslo School Museum connects these charts with object-based teaching, which gained prominence towards the end of the nineteenth century. It also describes substantial German and Swedish contributions to Norwegian chart collections.
Askim Historical Society's digital collection demonstrates the range of subjects, including botany, zoology, geography, history, chemistry and road traffic. The category therefore extends beyond botanical wall decoration. Read image and text together to understand the intended lesson.
For identification, record illustrator, publisher, printer, series number and language separately. Distinguish an original edition, a later printing and a modern reproduction. A date associated with the image is not necessarily the date the particular sheet was printed. Examine edges, hanging fittings, any rods, backing and repairs. Photograph the reverse and publisher's imprint. A history of school use can provide valuable provenance but needs evidence independent of an aged or worn appearance.
