Shoemaker’s awl

A shoemaker’s awl is a pointed hand tool used to pierce leather, including holes for stitching. It belongs to shoemaking, saddlery and related leatherwork. A slender steel point is fitted into a handle that provides grip and control.

MOT’s tool catalogue shows straight and curved points with different cross sections. Some models have replaceable points, but this is not universal. An awl pierces rather than drills and should be distinguished from a wheel pricker used to mark a sequence of stitching positions.

When identifying older examples, examine point shape, attachment and handle together. Record breakage, bending, corrosion and replaced parts. An old wooden handle does not automatically date the steel point because tools may have been repaired. State dimensions and markings without assigning a maker or a narrowly specific craft solely from superficial resemblance.
