Sleigh
A sleigh is a vehicle on runners for transporting people or goods, especially in winter conditions. Horses commonly supplied the pulling power in Norwegian farm and passenger transport. Working sleighs and passenger sleighs differed according to function and load.
Older constructions can combine wooden runners, crosspieces, uprights, wooden pegs and iron fittings. Runner shape, seating and load platform are more useful for identification than a single ornament. A carved or painted sleigh still needs to be assessed as a composite construction.
Collectors should document provenance, original paint, joints, repairs and surviving fittings. Regional type names should be used when their defining features can be confirmed. A date painted on one component does not by itself securely date the complete vehicle.
