Threshing flail (sliul)

A sliul is a hand flail for threshing grain. A long handle and a shorter striking stick are joined by a flexible connection. Norwegian regional names include tust and flygjel.

The striking part was swung onto sheaves on the barn floor to release grain. Cleaning the grain followed as a separate operation. A flail and a grain sieve therefore perform different tasks.

When examining an old example, record both wooden parts, the joint and wear. An old handle and a replacement strap may belong to the same object. Dark surfaces and simple construction do not provide secure dating. Farm provenance, the local name and evidence of earlier use can be as valuable as decoration.
