Earthenware
Earthenware is relatively porous ceramic that normally requires glaze to resist liquids. It occurs in tableware, jugs and decorative objects.
Earthenware or stoneware?
Earthenware is generally lower-fired and more porous than stoneware, which is hard, dense and high-fired. Norwegian distinguishes steintøy and steingods; German uses Steingut and Steinzeug. Salt-glazed Westerwald vessels are normally stoneware.
Identification and condition
Examine an unglazed area. Earthenware often shows a pale, matt and granular body. Factory marks and pattern numbers may be more reliable than colour or sound. Check hairlines, chips, crazing, stains, adhesive and repainting. Avoid soaking and dishwashers for old or repaired pieces.
