Svarvestol (traditional turning lathe)

Svarvestol is a traditional Norwegian name for a simple turning lathe. Det Norske Akademis ordbok defines it more specifically as a lathe without a flywheel. It should not be confused with a chair for sitting.

One described variant is the pole lathe, where a treadle and springing mechanism drive the work through a cord. With this arrangement, rotation alternates direction. Håvard Kongsrud's review of older turning techniques shows why drive, workholding and tool support should be described separately. Tools bearing a traditional name need not all have identical construction.

When cataloguing, photograph the bed, moving parts, centres and any cord or drive. Record missing parts or possible later reconstructions. Distinguish the tool's documented history from the age of the technology it represents. A traditional design may have been built recently. Wear alone gives neither a secure maker nor a farm association. A turned bowl cannot be linked to a particular lathe without further documentation.
