Wills when handling an estate in Norway
Wills and household belongings
A will records a person's wishes for distributing an inheritance within the limits of the law. It may concern specific objects, property or money. An object inventory provides a practical overview and must be distinguished from a will.
Find the documents before clearance
The Norwegian courts' private estate administration form asks about wills. The original must accompany the form unless it has already been deposited with or sent to the court. Set aside documents that may be wills before discarding papers. Note where they were found and ask the district court how to proceed.
Requirements and clarification
The courts state that a will must be written and signed by the testator and two witnesses. Requirements also apply to the witnesses and signatures. This is not a complete guide to making a valid will. Seek legal advice on drafting, interpretation or disputes. A will does not replace checking who may act for the estate, see the Norwegian estate administration certificate.
Next steps
Practical example: Set aside jewellery mentioned in the documents for clarification before sale. Once ownership and authority are established, request an OBA inspection of the household contents. This information concerns Norway and was checked on 1 November 2026.
