Peat spade

A peat spade is a tool for cutting and dividing peat, including fuel peat dried before use. The name covers several forms and tasks. One spade could detach larger pieces from the peat bank, while a smaller splitting or throwing spade could divide or lift the turf during subsequent work.

The Yrjar Heimbygdslag collection documents substantial variation among peat spades from Ørland, Norway. Several are wooden tools with iron edging; others contain more extensive iron parts. Belgium's MOT technical museum describes another type with raised blade edges that both cut and hold the peat block together. These are examples, rather than a universal description of Norwegian peat spades.

For identification, examine blade shape, edging, handle and wear together with known working history. Missing iron fittings or a replacement handle can change the object's appearance. Corrosion and patina alone do not establish age or origin. Local tool names and functions should be documented rather than assumed.
