Uskifteattest: Norwegian undivided estate certificate

An uskifteattest is a certificate issued by a Norwegian district court when a surviving spouse or cohabitant takes over an undivided estate. Uskifte means that settlement and distribution of the inheritance are postponed. This explanation concerns Norway and was checked against the Courts' and Norwegian Mapping Authority's information on 1 November 2026.

An undivided estate should not be confused with an already completed private estate settlement. The Courts describe different conditions and scope for spouses and cohabitants. Do not assume that every survivor automatically qualifies to retain every asset undivided. Ask the district court or a legal adviser if entitlement or authority to deal with assets is unclear.

Before reviewing or potentially selling household contents, clarify who is acting for the estate, which certificate is available and which assets are involved. A skifteattest for private administration and a formuesfullmakt for financial information serve different functions and should not be treated as the same document.

Practical example: A family wants a collection assessed but is awaiting clarification of who can agree a sale. Photographs and an object inventory can be prepared without representing this as a concluded instruction to sell.

Read about OBA's site visits and household contents services once the role and assignment are clear. A practical site visit does not replace clarification of the estate procedure by the court or an adviser.
