Washing tub
A washing tub is a vessel used for washing, including laundry. The term describes a function and does not imply that all examples share one material or construction. Older examples may be coopered from wooden staves secured by hoops.
Yrjar Heimbygdslag records tub YHL 2947 from Østmarka at Opphaug in Ørland, Norway, as used both for washing clothes and for personal washing. The collection also includes wooden tubs used for other purposes, including brewing. A wooden tub is therefore not automatically a laundry tub.
For identification, describe recorded use, shape, dimensions and construction separately. Record staves, base, handles and hoops, noting shrinkage, splits and repairs. A drainage hole can be relevant but does not establish function by itself. Do not transfer a museum's donation date or another tub's history to the example under examination.
